Our Plan in Action
We have excellent food safety systems in place but we are doing more, including:
- Developed comprehensive Enhanced Food Safety Protocols
- Created the position of Chief Food Safety Officer
- Establishing a Maple Leaf Food Safety Advisory Council
- Working with government and industry to enhance food safety across the entire industry
A Message From Michael McCain
Three months ago a listeriosis tragedy led to the Maple Leaf product recall and I promised you that Maple Leaf will always put food safety first, and we have.
The recall is over and the problems that led to it have been fixed. All Maple Leaf products in stores now meet or exceed the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada requirements. We are doing more than ever to ensure the integrity of our products and we intend to share our learnings with our customers, industry, and government colleagues to help the entire industry continue to make a good food safety system great to everyone’s benefit.
Maple Leaf has made a commitment to be a world leader in food safety and we’re making major changes to achieve this. Some of the highlights include:
- We have doubled the amount of testing in our plants as an early warning system. All test findings are reviewed daily. If our safety experts have any concerns, the product won’t leave the plant.
- Our equipment is now subject to more rigorous deep cleaning than ever before.
- We hired a new Chief Food Safety Officer to ensure we meet our commitment to be world class in food safety and to continuously improve.
The recall is over, but this promise is just beginning. Continuous improvement is our mission and we will continue to update you on changes that strengthen our food safety protocols.
As always, thank you for your support.
Michael H. McCain
President & Chief Executive Officer
